Design Inside Film

Flow 81 is an architecture studio founded in Málaga by Lourdes Arregui, Ignacio Merino, Gonzalo Merino, and Jose Miguel Arregui. In just a few years, the studio has become one of the most exciting and internationally recognised architectural voices emerging from Andalucia, and one of the most compelling in Spain. Flow 81 has earned a featured spot in Forbes España Magazine, following their achievements including a Special Mention at the Andalusian Architecture Awards and the Málaga Architects Award for Best Young Work in 2022. For a studio of their age, the recognition is extraordinary: a reflection not just of the quality of their work, but of the clarity and consistency of their vision. The studio works with a predominantly international clientele on premium residential and cultural projects across Spain and beyond, with a defining commitment to sustainable design, natural materials, and architecture that honours both place and time. For Flow 81, design does not begin at the drawing board. It begins on the land itself. As lead architect Ignacio Merino describes it: „When I first come to a plot, it speaks to me. Its orography, its rocks and its trees are certainly the starting point for the design.” This is not a poetic flourish. It is a working method. The studio’s aim is to create buildings with minimal environmental impact that, without seeking to dominate the places they inhabit, offer new spaces for interaction and, more importantly, allow us to reconnect with nature in harmony with the way we have done since the dawn of our species.
