We are design lovers traveling across Europe to explore the best interiors and architecture. Today, we vsit Istria – an idyllic gem hidden in plain sight on the Adriatic coast. One of the largest rural estates in this area is Stanzia Vinella. It is an ancient farmhouse surrounded by vineyards, olive trees and orchards – 6 hectares of land, in total. The estate is nearly 400 years old and has a panoramic view on the medieval tophill village Motovun. It was discovered by Andreas and Betty, a german-ethiopian couple. It took months and long negotiations before they could buy the estate. We admire, how they restored the stone farmhouse by using authentic, rugged and earthy elements. Their builders travelled all around Croatia to find vintage roof tiles and wooden battens to match the exposed oak beams. The entire goal of rustic interior design is to be as natural as possible and to celebrate the raw beauty. There is a focus on handmade furniture, line fabrics and decorations with a distinctly organic form. Matte and weathered finishes are unpretentious and speak to the snug essence of these style. All interior colours are inspired by the surrounding nature, from the subdued green of the oak, acacia and pine forest, the warm orange of the sunset, to the earthy brown of the mud. Rustic design, at its core, is the use of materials in their pure, most natural state. Andreas and Betty are fond of such simplicity and imperfection. They used only limewash paint which is known for its nuanced chalky texture that creates a romantic old-world fee. All decorative items add an authentic touch and lovely charm. There are handmade rugs bought from a Belgian designer based in the Marrakech medina; a carved wooden artwork from Sumba-wood, iron chandeliers from India and some objects from Betty’s homeland. The couple found a very good balance between new and old; between relaxing rural atmosphere and modern comfort.
